A wee bit about our honey

Gordon and Luke have been keeping bees on Iona since 2012, assisted at times by Lorraine and David (who now has his own hive!)

Iona Honey is carefully made by bees that forage in the organic gardens of the St Columba and Argyll Hotels on Iona, and beyond. It has been filtered through muslin, but is otherwise 'raw'.

If your honey has crystallised, you can soften it up again by putting the jar into a bowl of warm water and leaving it for a few minutes. It's considered best to avoid giving honey to children under one year old.
The 2014 season

Here on Iona, we had some very good weather during the summer, leading to a fine harvest of honey in late September. This one harvest contained all kinds of honey made by the bees in this year. As a result, we describe it - in a very non-specific way - as 'wildflower honey'.

Anyone who was lucky enough to taste the small amount of honey we harvested in 2013 will notice how much darker and thicker this year's crop is. This is because there's a higher percentage of 'heather honey' in it. As a result, it also has a much more 'robust' flavour!
